What Is EPG in IPTV? How the TV Guide Works, and How to Fix It

The EPG is the TV guide inside your IPTV app. Here is how it reaches your screen, and what to do when it is empty or shows the wrong times.

In short: EPG stands for Electronic Program Guide: the TV guide that shows what is on now and next. Your IPTV app downloads it separately from the channels. If the guide is empty, refresh it in the app and wait a few minutes. If the times are wrong, check the time zone on your device and the guide time offset in the app.

What EPG means

EPG stands for Electronic Program Guide. It is the grid you know from cable TV: channel names down the side, hours across the top, and the shows in between. In an IPTV app it usually appears in two places:

  • A small banner when you change channel, with the current show and the next one.
  • A full guide where you can scroll through the day, and sometimes several days ahead.

How the guide reaches your app

The channels and the guide are two different things. The channel list tells the app where to find each live stream. The guide is a separate file, often in a format called XMLTV, that lists the shows and their times for each channel. The app matches the two using an ID for each channel.

  • With an Xtream Codes login (server, username and password), most apps download the guide automatically.
  • With an M3U playlist link, some apps need a second link just for the guide. Your provider gives it to you if needed.

If you are not sure which login type you have, our article on M3U vs Xtream Codes explains the difference.

What you can do with it

  • See what is on now across all channels without switching one by one.
  • Plan your evening by scrolling ahead.
  • Set reminders, in apps that offer them.
  • Search for a show or a game by name, in apps that support search in the guide.
  • Show only your favourite channels, which helps a lot in homes that watch in two languages. See our guide for bilingual households.

Some apps and providers also offer catch-up or recording on certain channels. This depends on both the app and the channel, so ask before you count on it.

Why the guide is empty

An empty guide is the most common EPG question, and it usually has a simple cause.

  • You just signed in. The guide is a large file. On the first login it can take several minutes to download and process, especially on older devices.
  • The guide has not been refreshed. Look in the app settings for an option like "Update EPG", "Refresh TV guide" or "Reload". Run it, then wait.
  • The app's storage is full. Clearing the app cache and refreshing the guide again often fixes it.
  • The channel has no guide data. Some channels, like certain event or 24-hour single-show channels, simply do not publish a schedule. In that case an empty line is normal.

Why the times are wrong

Canada has six time zones, from Newfoundland to the Pacific, so time settings matter. If every show in the guide is off by the same number of hours, it is a settings issue, not a broken guide.

  1. Check the time zone of the device. On a Fire TV or Android box it is in the date and time settings. Choose your city or time zone, not just "automatic", if the time is wrong.
  2. Check the guide time offset in the app. Many IPTV apps have a setting called "EPG time offset" or "time shift". Set it to the number of hours the guide is off, for example +1 or -3.
  3. Refresh the guide after changing either setting.

When the guide shows the wrong shows

If one channel shows a completely different program than the one on screen, its guide is linked to the wrong channel ID. You cannot fix that on your side. Send the channel name to your provider so they can correct the link.

Tips for a guide that stays up to date

  • Let the app update the guide automatically once a day, if it has that option.
  • Hide channel groups you never watch. The guide loads faster and is easier to browse.
  • Restart the app after a big update, so it reads the new guide cleanly.

Every Boreal IPTV plan includes a TV guide on the channels that publish one. If yours is empty or off by a few hours after these steps, message us with your device and app, and we will go through it with you.
