In short: Most IPTV buffering comes from the connection between your router and your TV, not from the speed of your internet plan. Restart your router and device, test the speed on the TV itself in the evening, and move the TV to a cable or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If only one channel freezes, the problem is likely on the source side, so tell your provider.
Before changing anything, answer three quick questions. They point you to the right fix and save a lot of trial and error.
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Every channel freezes | Your home connection or Wi-Fi | Fixes 1 to 4 |
| Only one channel freezes | The source of that channel | Tell your provider |
| Only one TV or device freezes | That device or its Wi-Fi signal | Fixes 3, 5 and 6 |
| Only in the evening | Busy network at peak hours | Fixes 2, 3 and 10 |
| It stops when a second TV starts | Screen limit of your plan | Fix 9 |
It sounds too simple, but it fixes a surprising number of cases. Routers and streaming sticks run for weeks without a break and slowly fill their memory.
A speed test on your phone next to the router tells you very little. What matters is the speed that reaches the TV, at the time you actually watch. Install a speed test app on the TV or streaming device, run it between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., and run it twice.
As a comfortable minimum per screen watching at the same time:
If two TVs watch HD at the same time, add the numbers together. Our internet speed table shows the totals for two and three screens.
Wi-Fi is the most common cause of buffering. Walls, floors, microwaves and your neighbours' networks all weaken the signal, and every phone and tablet in the house shares it.
A router hidden in a cabinet, behind the TV or in the basement loses a lot of its range. Put it in the open, high up and as central as possible. If the TV is far away or on another floor, a mesh Wi-Fi system or a powerline adapter brings a strong signal close to it.
IPTV apps store channel lists, logos and the TV guide on the device. Over time this cache grows and can slow the app down. Clearing it does not delete your login in most apps, but keep your username and password nearby just in case.
Older streaming sticks have little memory and storage. When storage is almost full, everything slows down, including video. Uninstall apps you no longer use, and restart the device once a week. If a stick is several years old and struggles even on a cable, a newer model can make a real difference.
Many channels are offered in more than one quality, such as HD, Full HD and 4K. A 4K stream needs about twice the speed of HD. If your connection is borderline, the HD version of the same channel often plays smoothly where 4K stutters, and on most TV sizes the difference is small.
Many IPTV player apps let you choose between more than one built-in video player, and some let you increase the buffer size in their playback settings. A larger buffer loads a few more seconds of video in advance, which helps on connections that dip from time to time. Change one setting at a time, so you know which one helped.
Each plan allows a set number of screens to watch at the same time. If a third TV starts a channel on a two-screen plan, one of the streams may stop or refuse to start. Remember devices that are easy to forget, like a tablet in a bedroom or a TV left on in the basement.
Between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., your whole street streams, games and video-calls at the same time. If buffering only happens then, test again at midday. A big difference between the two results points to congestion at your internet provider. A cable connection to the TV helps, and if the problem continues, call your internet provider with your test results in hand.
If you have tried the basics and the picture still freezes, write to your provider with useful details. It makes the check much faster:
An honest note: no IPTV service can promise "zero buffering", because part of the path is your own internet and Wi-Fi. That is why we offer a free trial: you test on your own TV, at the hours you watch, before you pay.
